In this case the 80 year old was a tortoise and the contest was one of the classes in Horeb's very successful Pet Show on 27th March. Success was somewhat of a surprise to those who organised the event because on the previous day they were certain of only half-a-dozen entries altogether.
But on the day they rolled up - cats and kittens, rabbits and hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, land snails, tortoises, stick insects - and even some in the 'unusual pets' class. The Paterson Hall was buzzing with young people, parents, grand parents - and pets.
While the judging was going on there were plenty of activities in the church: Animal Word Squares, Design your own New Animal, Play-doh Modelling, Fill-in-the Animal Clues - and, of course, plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits. The Name the Soft Toy Dog competition was popular, too.
Rosettes and prizes were awarded, with certificates for every entry. Then everyone was asking, 'will there be another Pet Show next year?' The event didn't make a profit, but it brought a lot of new people to the Paterson Hall, which was at least part of the idea. |
