On Sunday 13th September the church was full! Bethel congregation joined us, and lots of Colin and Elizabeth's family and friends were there to help celebrate Colin's 50 years of ordained ministry; and we were joined, too, by visitors on holiday. Some 120 people had come on the previous day for a party; among them was Revd John Marsh, the URC's Assembly Moderator - who even helped with the clearing up!
At the Sunday service John brought gifts: for Horeb a small earthenware pot with a tea light inside. This related to Paul's description of us in 2 Corinthians 4, as vulnerable 'common clay pots' who hold the light of Christ; and a scallop shell, the ancient Christian symbol of pilgrimage. And for Bethel an olive wood cross from Palestine, symbolisng the suffering of God's people and the hope in Christ's cross and resurrection.
His words were both encouraging and challenging, and he pointed out that both Horeb, the mountain of God, and Bethel, the house of God, are needed in our Christian life together.
Afterwards we shared a cake with 50 candles and other goodies. Altogether it was a memorable and inspiring weekend. Gifts to celebrate 50 years of ministry were given to Christian Aid, and amounted to £750.
