Kitchen Finally Finished |
Friday, 02 July 2010 22:56 |
It seems to have been a long time coming, but the kitchen is finally finished and in use. Together with the improvements in the entrance vestibule, the corridor and the toilets it means we now have premises to be proud of. The kitchen fitting work was done by Shaun from Celtic Connect. The electrical work by Ian, and the tiling by David Brealey. The floor coverings were put down by Ben, Barry and Brian from Prestige Carpets. And a huge thank you for all the building work, new doors and windows and roller shutter hatch, done by Nef and Russell Roberts.
The boiling water heater, capable of producing endless hot drinks, has been especially praised. Everyone should make themselves familiar with the instructions for using it and the dishwasher. There are new practices regarding tea towels and waste. The final cost is about £24,500, the majority of which has been received from grants. Now we must learn to use our facilities really well for the benefit of church and community. |

Easter Celebrations |
Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:27 |
Generally regarded in Christian circles as the greatest church Festival, Easter has slipped below the wider community's radar: it is often just another holiday. But here at Horeb we met for a moving service of communion on Maundy Thursday, activities for children on Good Friday morning, with a much appreciated service at St Bridget's and in the Waterfall Gardens later. Then a full house and joyful celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Sunday. Thank you! |

Young people take the lead |
Thursday, 04 February 2010 11:00 |
Every third Sunday the High School group of young people meet separately from the younger children. Until now Liz Pritchard led this group, and her leadership was really appreciated. She now feels it is time to relinquish that role, and Maddy Whyler has taken on leadership of the group.
When they met in January the appalling earthquake in Haiti had just happened and they talked about it. Realising the massive amounts of aid which would be needed they decided to do their bit, and each decided on a different way of raising some money for the next month.

80 year old wins rosette |
Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:25 |
In this case the 80 year old was a tortoise and the contest was one of the classes in Horeb's very successful Pet Show on 27th March. Success was somewhat of a surprise to those who organised the event because on the previous day they were certain of only half-a-dozen entries altogether. But on the day they rolled up - cats and kittens, rabbits and hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, land snails, tortoises, stick insects - and even some in the 'unusual pets' class. The Paterson Hall was buzzing with young people, parents, grand parents - and pets.
While the judging was going on there were plenty of activities in the church: Animal Word Squares, Design your own New Animal, Play-doh Modelling, Fill-in-the Animal Clues - and, of course, plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits. The Name the Soft Toy Dog competition was popular, too.
Rosettes and prizes were awarded, with certificates for every entry. Then everyone was asking, 'will there be another Pet Show next year?' The event didn't make a profit, but it brought a lot of new people to the Paterson Hall, which was at least part of the idea. |

The Christmas Story - Retold |
Monday, 11 January 2010 13:07 |
Is this JUST how it was?
Well, the Gospels all tell different stories about the birth of Christ, so why not write it a different way again? That was where Horeb's children and young people started from. Keeping the essentials of the old story, they added a few new twists. Then they added some songs, and pictures on the window cills.
